External hdd question

I am considering buying a external hd. I'm completely new to this concept and to macs. I have a mbp 1.83 with 2 gb of ram on the way. My question is do external hds work seamlessly with your computer? If I have all of my music and videos on the external will they work easily with iTunes simply?
I have been searching the forums for 2 hrs and have not seen any questions like this.
