External HDD randomly reconnects

I'm a new mac user, just picked up a MacBook last Thursday. Everything has been working smoothy except for an external hard drive I have. It will reconize it but about 10sec later it drops the hdd then it sees it again. Is there something I'm missing?

This has never happened on my PC. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it a self-powered drive? Do you have access to another Mac you could test it on?

It's not a self-powered drive. It has its own external power source. BTW its a Maxtor One Touch III External Drive. This is my first mac so I don't have any other one I can try it on. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I've had this issue, but it was only temporary, like the first time or two I plugged it in. I think Apple does "something" extra for certain drives types when they are first being used on a machine, but this is only a guess, but I haven't had the issue since I first started using it.
