I searched like mad and got no satisfactory easy to understand answers on this subject. Apparently it was everywhere but heck if I saw anything relevant so here goes:

Formatted a g-tech mini external drive using disk utility (was done correctly)

After format disk Utility reads at the bottom:
14 folders, 88 files, 448.4MB used

So what may that be? It was used as a time machine backup and also backing up other files, and I need a larger external and wanted to sell this one.

Thanks in advance if I dont get a chance to thank the person for their time. It's appreciated.

One folder is named .Trashes. Another is named .TemporaryItems. Their purpose should be plain from their names.

There's also .Spotlight-V100, for Spotlight data, and additional ones for other system purposes. The fundamental file-system structure (i-nodes, extents, etc.) also takes up space.

One could explore it with the command-line, but it's not all that interesting.

Thanks. You got the names down even haha nice.

Kind of strange it doesn't delete everything on there, but I guess it is beyond my tech comprehension in this matter.
