I have a 250GB external HDD that has 2 partitions on it, 1 large HFS+ and a 32GB FAT32 partition. It worked fine when I formatted it. I then connected it to my old windows machine and moved about 10GB worth of pics onto the FAT32 partition. Now OSX is taking forever to recognize it. It keeps accessing it (the activity light flashes a lot), but it never shows up on the desktop or Disk Utility. What's going on?

External HDD taking forever to mount

As it's trying to mount, open Activity Monitor up and look at All Processes. Is there something struggling with a high CPU percentage?
