Hi all,

during the years I have accumulated various HDDs, mainly for media purposes although I have a couple of hundred of GBs of important files.
As of now I have one HDD for TimeMachine backup and two HDD (2TB and 4TB respectively) to house files and media.
I have toyed with the idea of a single 6-8-10TB HDD (of course power connected as those can't be powered by only a laptop) in order to have all my files in one place and eventually use the current HDDs I have as redundancies.
I also toyed with the idea of having my media on an online "folder" in order to avoid connecting an HDD to my laptop every time. I currently have a laptop, one smart TV (I resorted to connect my TV to my laptop with Plex in order to have a better access) and an iPad, and the idea of seamlessly streaming a movie on my TV/laptop/tablet is pretty attractive.

Considering also the price point (a 8TB Seagate or WD would set me back around 150-200 and that's fine, but I can't really go for the 300-400+ options) what would you suggest?
A bigger, power-connected HDD to house my files or going for a NAS? And in that case what kind/type?

I have done some reading and apparently one of the best setup is the mirroring - everything on one drive and then mirrored to another but I don't want to waste too much space (I would essentially buy two to use one). What would be the best option? I have seen recommendations for NAS due to the fact that the HDD can be changed, so if I currently buy a 6tb drive and tomorrow I want to exchange it with a bigger one I can do that.

What are you thoughts?

Thank you all for the help,

PS: I heard about connecting a big HDD (Seagate Expansion Units for example) to a modem in order to share the drive contents with the connected devices. Would that be a feasible alternative?
