I have 4 external HDDs. Two of them are identical Lacie 500 GB, one of them is a 500 GB Maxtor, and the newest one is a 2 TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex.
Out of all 4 drives, only the Maxtor sleeps properly. With the Maxtor plugged in to either my iMac or MacBook, when I put the computer to sleep, the Maxtor spins down and the light goes out in seconds. With the other three drives, I put the computer to sleep and they continue to spin. And spin. And spin. The two Lacie drives at least have a power switch on them so I can turn them off if need be, but the Seagate doesnt even have that. It just spins continuously. I first noticed this when I turned my MacBook off and disconnected the Seagate drive from it. The next day into my office and the Seagate was still spinning. The only thing it was attached to was power.
Anyone have any ideas how to make these drives sleep? Is there anything I can do, or am I better off just taking this Seagate back and getting a different drive?
