External Keyboard Function Keys

Hi, I have a Dell external keyboard, but it is absolutely basic. I was wanting to assign the shortcuts to it sort of like I can with my MacBook Pro (e.g. Volume control, playback control, etc). I've tried SizzlingKeys, but I didn't like it much, and it only lets me control iTunes playback, nothing else. I tried using KeyRemap4MacBook, but I didn't get far with that (neither did I get far with that on my MBP with my MBP's internal KB). The Dell keyboard is connected to my Mac Pro running Lion. Any ideas? Thanks.
