external mic wont work

I have a basic G4, 500mhz, agp/graphics, 1GB ram,250gb WD hdd. I'm just getting started with Mac. I thought I had researched hdd limitations thouroughly, found out the hard way 128gb max.

Anyway, my real problem is that my mic dosen't work. Are there any other hardware devices that can be used via firewire or usb or would a new sound card be a better idea.

Not really sure which would be the best way to go on this, and the only reason I need it is to be able to use Skype.

I'm not sure if it's the same disease, but I had the same symptoms when I bought my first Mac Pro. It was something about the jack not accepting non-powered mics. A little product called iMic (available at the Apple store), which allowed me to run my 1/8" jacks into a USB port, did the trick for me.
