External monitor as only monitor w/ laptop

Is there a way to use my external monitor as my only monitor when connected to my mbp? Or, can i clone my display, but at separate resolutions? I am able to do this on windows with nvidia software, is there software that allows further customization?

ps, i dont have a keyboard/mouse so i have the lid open

You can either choose to mirror or extend the desktop in your Display system preferences, and whichever monitor in the Arrange tab has the menu bar will become the primary display. The one problem is that you do need to have an external mouse and keyboard while the notebook is in "clamshell" mode in order to operate on the additional display.

The OP requested only monitor. Use a usb keyboard/mouse and connect it to the notebook. Close the lid, make sure it's in sleep mode. Then wake it up using the keyboard/mouse. This is called clamshell mode.

sorry, to clarify, i'm looking for a way to do all this, without having to go into clamshell mode. im getting the feeling there isn't?
