External Monitor as Single Display when disconnecting AC power

Hey folks, anyone know how to work around this problem?:

- I have an external monitor connected to my MBP
- I want to use it as single display
- I close the lid of my MBP
- I wake it up using an external apple wireless keyboard
- MBP now running with lid closed (clamshell mode) on single display
- I disconnect the power adaptor just to get the battery juices flowing every few days
- The MBP seems to go back to sleep
- I try waking it up in clamshell mode, it wakes up for a few seconds and goes back to sleep until I open the lid of the MBP.

Any solutions?

Just tried it on my MBP. Same thing, except I can't wake it at all without power.

Hmmm that is weird. I don't know if Apple has done this intentionally, or if it's something they simply just "missed." It doesn't make much sense to me.
