External monitor compatibility question

I have a 2017 12" Retina Macbook. I'm looking at potential getting a larger external monitor. Samsun has one thats 49" with a resolution of 5120 x 1440. Looking at the specs for the 12", it can support an external monitor of up to 4096 x 2034. Will it work with the Samsung? I'm not sure how that works. The 5120 x 1440 has less pixels than the 4096 x 2034, but I'm not sure if that matters or if the limitation is on the width in which case the Samsung is too wide.
