External monitor (HDMI) no longer working with lid closed

I have been using Ventura with my MBP 14 M1 for the past month or so with no issues. However, just last night my external monitor stopped working via HDMI only with the lid closed. It works fine with it open as a second monitor. Is there something that I am missing? Just seems different than all the other display issues with Ventura where it doesn't recognize it at all, but this issue is only with the lid closed.
 
I'm having the same problem with my M2 MacBook Air. Were you able to find a solution/fix?
 
I had to set "Allow accessories to connect: Always" for my external monitor to work in clamshell.
