External monitor issue

Hey all,
New MBP user here trying to connect a few month old dell E228WFP flat panel monitor to the DVI port on my laptop. Monitor was detected, however it only displays my background with no dock or menu bar and none of my open windows. Looking for some ideas...already restarted the mbp to the same result. Help me out? Thanks ~Jason.

It is probably set to extend mode. Set it to mirror so you can see the dock.

Mirror: both shows the same, dock is present.

Extension: Primary shows the dock and everything, 2nd will only show what you put in it.

if u go in system prefs. > displays > arrangement > (Drag top bar on mbp window to external monitor) if u want it on that one and so u dont have it on the mbp side.... here

See the white bar on top u can drag it to which monitor u want it on... or you can mirror it basically copiing the other monitor.
