External monitor losing signal

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 that I connect to a Samsung P2450 external monitor. I am using an Apple display port to DVI adapter. Recently in the last week all of a sudden my external monitor screen flickers and I lose the video signal. I have to restart the Macbook Pro to get the signal to come back. I know there is somewhat of a signal going to the monitor, because the monitor does not go into standby. On the monitor if I scroll through the other available connections (HDMI, Anolog) then back to DVI the screen starts to come up then goes black again. Not sure what is causing this. Any thoughts?
