External monitor - No dock or taskbar?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere; I couldn't find anything.

I just started connecting an external monitor to my MBP, and everything's working fine (I'm using the extended option, not mirroring), except there's no dock or taskbar on the external... is it supposed to be like this? If not, has anyone else experienced this? what can I do?

It's supposed to be that way. You can decide on which screen the dock and menubar should be on in system preferences -> displays by dragging.

Or you can use SecondBar to have a menu bar on each display and Dock Spaces to have a dock on each display.
