I’m having a surprisingly hard time determining what sort of external to use. I’m a big user of Vectorworks and thought I’d look into a larger screen for working on while i’m at home. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro 2.8 with 16GB’s of ram. The thing is, i’m seemingly already pushing the hardware because things like zooming in and out and complex tasks and any 3D rendering takes a bit of time and it gets choppy. I’m concerned that adding a 4K monitor or something like the Ultra Fine LG might just make everything go slower? Does anyone have any experience using a 4 or 5K external while using applications that push the computer? As crazy as it sounds I’m loooking at these prices and wondering if I should just get a base level iMac instead for home use?

I would get the Dell U3818DW - it's a 38" ultrawide with USB-C that provides power (100W), DisplayPort video (3840x1600 IPS, 60 Hz), audio over DisplayPort (volume/brightness controllable through 3rd party software), and USB 3.1 (2.0 speeds when you connect via USB C).

I have one and love it; I take my laptop to class every day and when I get home I can just plug in the single USB C connector and get the full benefits of the giant display for CAD, productivity, etc.
