external monitor settings

I was wondering if there is a software I can use to have my monitor settings the same?

Right now everytime I connect my macbook to the external monitor the settings are the same as the macbook (browser, adium and etc), and then when I unplug it and replug it, it resets to the default.

I tried searching through the forum with external monitor but those issues are mainly monitor hardware issues...
