I connect my MacBook Pro to an external monitor via a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor and VGA cable. When I start up my computer, this setup works fine.

If I unplug the cable from my computer or let the computer (or just the screen) go to sleep the monitor will of course go to sleep.

THE PROBLEM:
When I plug the it in again or my computer wakes up, the monitor will wake up an then go back to sleep after a few seconds or give me a "Check Signal Cable" message.

Although my built-in display refreshes when I plug in the cable, the computer will otherwise continue to operate as though no external monitor were connected. My mouse pointer is still confined to the built-in display and my Display settings window does not change. Holding option and clicking "Detect Displays" in this window does nothing.

It is very frustrating to know that my Mac and this monitor are capable of working together but that I have to restart my Mac to do it. If anyone knows of any fix for this I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks very much.

Monitor: Samsung S22D390H
Mac: MacBook Pro 15” Late 2011 | i5 2.4 GHz | 10.10.1
