External Monitor to Laptop

I use an external monitor when I am at home. The problem is when I move to another location to work and I don't drag all my windows that were on the external to my laptop screen. For some reason, when I am only on my laptop, I cannot view the documents or windows because the laptop thinks I'm still using an external and the document is way off the screen. Is there a way to remedy the problem?
