Stupid question, sorry.

What's the cheapest/ideal method of connecting a MBP with a USB Type-C port to an external monitor?

Don't really fancy shelling out $150–250 for one of the fancy docks.

Thanks in advance.

You can find an adapter from USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort fairly cheaply. Just be aware that if you need a 4K adapter that some HDMI adapters can only run 4K at 30Hz so you'll have to get one that supports 60Hz

Also watch out for HDMI ports. Mine is pretty finnicky (very frequently producing flickering or just a blank green screen) that seems to be in reviews for all USB-C > HDMI adapters.

I've been using my Club3D USB C to DisplayPort adapter since November. Supports 4k at 60Hz (If I recall, this was hard to find, at least when I looked) and the build quality of the adapter is really impressive.
