External Raid-5 Arrays

I've been thinking about getting an external raid-5 array for my iMac. I keep running out of space on various external HDs and thought this would be a good solution. I want something with Firewire 800 and the two I've found are the Drobo and the Mercury from Other World Computing. The problem is both have some pretty bad reviews. Anyone have other suggestions or comments on these two units?

I'm trying not to spend more then $500 (exluding the hard drives).
