Hey,

i am planning to buy a small RAID rack to finally get a safe storage solution and to get rid of all the small 2,5 external HDDs as well. As i have no experience with RAID, the necessery parts or anything expept p&p external hard drives i could use a little help from you guys.

For the rack itself i would go with something like this, keeping it cheap and thus affordable for my as my budget is only about 250-300$. My 17" Laptop already has an eSATA port, for the Air i will have to go with an additional USB 3.0 -> eSATA adapter. The HDDs themselves would be two Western Digital WD20EARKS 2TB drives.

The whole thing is supposed to provide the backup storage for both my 13" Macbook Air and my 17" Win 7 laptop so i guess it will have to be formated in FAT32, right? Or is it possible to split a RAID 1 in two partitions, one for OS X and one for Win7? Again, i am new to this, so please excuse me if this is a really stupid question.

So, do you have any advice, maybe a different hardware setup? I am open to all suggestions

Thanks in advance,
AirNwB, the RAID-n00b ;)
