I know this is a long shot, but is it possible to mount external RAM on a 2013 iMac? I've read that it is nearly impossible to install manually, so external sounds like an idea.

External RAM is not possible. I take it you have a 21.5" iMac then since on the 27" RAM is easily user accessible.

Yes, you're right. Forgot to mention that. Well ok, 8 gb isn't terrible anyway. ;)

"External" RAM?
...nope.

Upgrading RAM in recent iMacs depends on your screen size.
A 27-inch iMac has a door on the back - pop open the door, and insert the RAM.
Easy - ifixit.com calls it "moderate" difficulty.
The 21.5-inch has to be sliced open, and is a challenging upgrade - but not "impossible". iFixit.com only has a teardown video, and no individual repair guides for replacing parts on the thin-edge 21.5-inch iMacs.
This page has videos showing how to upgrade both sizes of iMacs.

I think it's easy to see that you need to think twice before opening up the 21.5-inch iMac.
The 27-inch, by comparison, needs very little prep, other than the RAM.
