I have a 500GB Sandisk Extreme SSD (the 550mb/s version) and while the iPad Pro detects it with a cable directly to the USB C port, sometimes it's slow to be recognizes, other times the video files are slow to load, but almost always, when I plug it back into my laptop, the SSD is not recognized and has to be scanned to 'repair drive' and then after that is done, it works.

Anyone have issues with External SSDs on the iPad Pro M1? Why does this happen?

Yes, all external SSDs are slow on the M1 iPad Pro. With a USB 3.2 Samsung T7 I got a transfer rate of 40 MBps. APFS formatted 300 MBps. Thunderbolt 3 are slow too. Don’t expect more than 600 MBps with TB3/USB4 SSDs. Maybe it’s the intel retimer Apple used that cause these issues. Try to format to APFS or using a TB3 cable.
