I had this problem before with ML but it went away with Mavericks. At least until I did an update to Yosemite which didn't work out.
Since rolling back at least once a day when my iMac wakes up the external screen will have resized and use a fraction of the available screen space.
When going to Detect Displays in System Preferences, sometimes it will rest right away, other times it seems to do nothing and I'm stuck pressing Detect Displays for a five minutes until something registers.
Is there a way to prevent this happening in the first place, or the force Detect Displays to actually work the first time?
