I've gotta say I love my 2015 15" rMBP especially the retina "best for display" setting.

The problem I'm facing is I want to run 1440p on an external monitor. This gives me 2 options.

1. Run a 4k monitor scaled.
2. Run a native 1440p monitor.

I'm more interested in then second option but what I'm worried about is using a non-retina screen and not finding it sharp or crisp enough compared to my MBP screen.

Shame my MBP can't drive a 5K display at retina.

If you don't mind paying extra for the 4k display, buy it.

Then run it in HiDPI (retina) mode.

Otherwise, you could find yourself dissatisfied with a non-retina display...

A native 1440p display won't be anywhere as crisp as the retina display on your MBP, but it's not so awful as to be unbearable. If you've every looked at a non-retina display, then you'll have a pretty good idea what it looks like.
