Hi - sorry if this topic's been covered before. I'm new here and am posting in desperation and frustration at having no luck getting answers on the official Apple boards...

I bought a set of Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II. They sound really good when connected directly to my iPod, but just awful connected to my Mac (PowerPC G4). Virtually unlistenable, there's so much distortion - even at really low volume level.

I've checked the audio MIDI utility set-up and that seems to be fine. The problem is worst on the right-hand speaker, but when I switch the channels in the utility, the problem migrates to the left-hand speaker. I've tried cleaning the out socket with canned air (from my wife's photo-accessory bag) and checking the connections on the inside but there's nothing much to see there.

This is driving me bonkers, so any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks.
