Since the speakers on the mbp are ok, but not great, I was wondering if I could hook the laptop up to a set of external speakers. Im sure this would work, so my main question is, would I then also need the amp that normally goes with those speakers, or is that not necessary? Im asking because although my speakers are relatively new, my amp/stereo system is a lot older and I doubt they would be compatible with anything digital. Supposing it does work, what would I need/how would I do this? Thanks.

PC speakers generally use a 3.5mm input jack that you stick in the headphones jack on your laptop.
Most likely you would need some sort of external soundcard. Do your speakers use 1/4" TRS plugs or the standard audio cables.
