External Speakers Problem with Mac Mini

I'm not getting any sound on external speakers with Mac Mini (late 2014) and El Capitan OS X (version 10.11.1). I've tried both inputs on the back of the Mac Mini and the only option that appears in the System Preferences > Sound window is "internal speakers (built-in)." Earlier I was able to use the same external speakers on an older Mac Pro computer, so I don't think the problem is with the speakers themselves.

Thanks for any tips on how to configure the Mac Mini so it will play sound through external speakers.
