My iMac does not recognize external speakers. Headphones work fine. Only 'internal speakers' on menu. I have looked at other postings in regard to this problem and have done the basic things they said to fix but still nothing works.

Are you using the correct port for external speakers? It has the headphone icon - and is, in fact, the same port that you use for headphones.

The second port, which has a symbol that looks like it could be dual speakers, is actually for an audio input, such as a microphone, and won't work for speakers.
