External SSD Drive

Hi Guys

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro 2017 13 inch and would like to try out PB Mojave, I am going to purchase a WD SSD external drive, my question is can I just download to the drive then boot from it or do I need to format the drive first before use. Apologies if this sounds a stupid question.
