I'm running High Sierra from an external SSD formatted as spfs.
I've noticed two things of interest.

1. There is no recovery boot. I think this could be because I formatted to apfs before I installed HS.

2. Loading apps is a lot snappier than from the internal hard drive so I'm using the external SSD as my daily driver.

The recovery boot is an integral part of APFS and it’s hidden. You can’t see it from the boot picker. It’s there inside of the APFS container.

Just to add - Boot to the Recovery partition, by booting while pressing Command-r
As above poster says, the recovery system is hidden
