I have a 2011 Mac Mini (the one with discrete graphics). It has 2 internal drives (120 GB SSD and 750 GB spinner). Also connected to it are a 2 TB (store home movies) and 3TB (used for time machine) drive. Both are connected by USB 2 even though they are USB 3 capable.

Currently the time machine is full backing up my wife's MacBook pro and my mini, so I am again contemplating more storage. I am about out of USB ports on my Mini + Thunderbolt display, and am thinking about some alternatives.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Thunderbolt docks out there, or is that overkill given I already have the Thunderbolt Display? I would just be getting it to get USB 3 functionality so I can add more external drives. Or would I be better off going with a Thunderbolt drive/enclosure? I was looking some at the Drobo 5D and the Akito (sp?) 4 bay enclosure... but man those are expensive even before factoring in hard drives.

Thanks for any advice you have!
