Hi, I've ordered the 5k with 512GB SSD, and would now like to get some good RAID5/6 storage, primarily for videos and photos. The only off-the-shelf models I can see with thunderbolt 2 are the Pegasus2 R4/R6 and the LaCie 2big/5big.

There's a lot of bad user reviews for the older thunderbolt 1 models, and I wonder if anyone has tried out the Thunderbolt 2models with success. I'd also be keen to know if anyone has been able to compare the noise output of the models. (I used to have a ReadyNasNV+ which my family delighted in switching off because of the noise!)

thanks

You can also do software RAID5 with the OWC enclosure.

IMHO, hardware RAID5 is terrifying. While software is imperfect, at least it's portable. When a hardware RAID5 controller goes down, you MUST get a compatible (often the exact same) replacement, or you can't get to your data. Depending on the circumstances, this could mean searching for long discontinued parts (sometimes at exorbitant prices).

That's why I won't touch a Drobo - it's proprietary as hell.
