Currently sitting on a few bits of hardware that includes a rMBP and a Windows system with a Blu Ray drive. Have done plenty of hardware swaps on previous Macbook and Macbook Pro models, and assumed it was the same drive in the external Super Drive.

I presumed with a few minutes time, a screwdriver or two, and an external Super Drive, I would be able to swap the Blu Ray into the Apple external and get a sleek looking Blu Ray drive for media and movie purposes.

Wrong I was. Took apart the external super drive, and it is not the same drive found in the Macbook and Macbook Pro systems. All appears to be hardwired with one cable run from the USB port all the way to the optical drive connections.

Looks like she will be going up on Craigslist shortly.

Not surprised. Same thing as many external USB drives (missing SATA connections on the internal drives)...

But good to know.
