External USB hard disk randomly begins spinning

Hi,

I have plugged an external USB hard disk into my MBA 2011 for some extra storage and have automatic Time Machine deactivated but Lion somehow still powers the external HD randomly on.

This happens while browsing or just writing in Pages, so I am not even accessing the HD.

Maybe this has something to do with Spotlight looking for new files on the external HD?
