External Wallpaper Sometimes Doesn't Load

Sometimes, when plugging in my external monitor, the wall paper doesn't load. Instead, just a grey background is there. To fox this,, I have to discunnect the monitor and reattach it.

What causes this? Happens a good 50% of the time I plug my monitor in. I am running 10.8.2
