I'm trying to test whether I'm going to be able to build/buy a directional antenna to get reception for my campus wireless network at a site that's a bit out of range, but to do that I need to be able to actually connect an antenna.

I can buy a card with an antenna jack on it, but since I've got laptops laying all over the place, it seems like I should be able to temporarily jury-rig an external antenna just so I can see if it'll work.

Has anybody managed to do this? If I crack open an Aria Extreme PC card does it have a useable jack inside, or will I just break it?

Is there another way to do this I'm not thinking of? Google was not helpful if you don't want to physically cut up the computer to install stuff...
