Extracting clip from .mkv in VLC (mac)

Hello. I'm just wondering if any of you know how I can extract a clip from a .MKV movie file in VLC player?? I've tried various option an none so far have worked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

VLC's track extracting / remuxing / reconverting capabilities leave a lot to be desired. I don't recommend using it.

The workflow you should need to do:

- remux with Subler to mp4 / m4v / mov

- edit / trim the resulting and (unlike MKV - hence the need for a MKV->mp4 conversion) already-compatible footage with any mp4 / m4v / mov editor: QuickTime 7 Pro, avidemux etc.

Does Quicktime not support MKV files?? And how good is Avidemux?? Why do I need an app like Subler first? Is there not one app that would do all of it without being too expensive like Final Cut?

I would use mscMPEG Streamclip[/U, it allows trimming and cutting, but you need to export the result, which means another transcoding step and probably not the MKV container.

Also know, that MKV files most probably use an MPEG-4 codec, which is not meant for frame precise editing, as not every frame is stored, only keyframes, thus the frames between keyframes are interpolated.

It does.

And how good is Avidemux?? Why do I need an app like Subler first?

Both are much better at remuxing / stream extraction than most other tools, particularly the, remuxing-wise, pretty incapable VLC.
