Hi! I had to join this forum today just to ask about this current bizarre set of problems that has me completely stumped!
Macbook pro 2.5 i5, 16GB ram 1tb SSHD
Running Mountain Lion (old I know, I work with music and this setup has been very stable with the music software and plugins that I use so I've stuck to it)
Some of the multiple error messages that I started getting a few days ago:
-You're screenshot can't be saved. You don't have permission to save files in the location where screenshots are stored
-Time Machine couldn't complete the backup, backup requires 582 GB, but only 477 are available. (backup HD is 1TB, my internal HD is 1TB and about half full)
-The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50). (while trying to empty the trash)
-Keychain "login" cannot be found to store "registrationV1"
-Can't open user profile directory, because you lack sufficient privileges. Contact the administrator of this machine.(Opera browser)
-An unknown error occurred (13014) (in iTunes)
-Safari can't use the extension "____" because the extension is no longer valid
-Keychain "login" cannot be found to store "Safari"
-Failed to access the Undo history file. Switching to memory based undo. Live will not be able to recover sets after crashes anymore. (Ableton Live, music production software)
These problems will start happening out of nowhere, safari and opera become unusable, along with all the other errors that start popping up. after a restart it will go seemingly back to normal, but errors will start back up again eventually sometime within minutes sometimes within hours.
What i've done so far:
-repaired permissions with Disc Utility and Drive Genius.
-verified hard drive in DU, one time i got the message "partition map needs to be repaired, problem with EFI system partition". Fixed disc and never got this message again
-Ran Tech Tool Pro, passed all tests including surface scan
-Reset user permissions on home folder with this in Terminal:
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~
-Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs in Terminal after starting up in recovery mode
-Reset bot SMC and PRAM
-Reinstalled Lion in recovery mode (not a clean install, would like to avoid this if possible)
One possible cause but really not sure:
A few days ago i was making room on my HD and came across a huge folder called Safety Net, which was apparently created by Carbon Copy when i upgraded HD's and cloned my previous HD to this current HD months ago. Some quick research online told me that this folder is created as a safety backup and is safe to be deleted, which I did. I would assume that this might be related to the above problems though I'm not sure. When I examined the folder it seemed to contain duplicates and older versions of many files that were already on my HD.
Any ideas?? (Sorry for the long post!)
