Hello,

I've just bought an EyeTV Hybrid for use with an iMac and a Wii. I do not plan to watch TV with it, I just wanted a way to play my Wii without having to buy a TV.

As soon as I tried using it, I ran into some problems. When I plug in the cables, I get audio, but no video signal. I tried changing between Component and SVideo inputs, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

After a long time playing with different configurations, I stumbled across a workaround. If I go to the Devices tab in Preferences, set the signal to analog, disable timeshift, and set the Live Quality to the lowest possible setting (something like 352x240) then I get a video signal. This works with both SVideo and the RCA connections.

Cool.

I played like this for a while, but it's pretty ugly. As you can imagine, stretching the 352x240 video feed to 1920*1200 is not too pretty. It's OK for cartoony games (Mario looks fine), but it's almost impossible to read text (Golden Eye is difficult to play, for example).

So, my questions are:

  1. Is it normal that I have to play on the lowest Live Quality setting? If not, does anyone have a suggestion on how to work around this?
  2. If not, is there something that I might be able to change to improve the image quality?
  3. Does this sound normal? I can still return the product for another few days. If this is the best it's going to get, I might try looking for an alternate solution (Any recommendations?).

I checked the video settings on my Wii, and set it to the 480i option (it wouldn't let me go to 480p) and 4:3 aspect ratio. The EyeTV is set to 4:3 aspect ratio, with stretch turned off.

I'm using the following:
  • iMac 24" (mid-2009 edition), w/ Intel Core2Duo
  • Snow Leopard with the latest updates applied.
  • EyeTV Hybrid, EU 2008 model.
  • EyeTV Software, version 3.5.2.
  • RCA Cables.
  • North American Wii from a long time ago. On the latest software revision.

One thing that may stand out is that I'm using a North American Wii, with a European EyeTV. (I moved from Canada to France some years ago.) Some friends had suggested that I might be experiencing a PAL vs NTSC incompatibility, but I'm not sure. I know that my North American Wii will work fine with a European CRT TV, even with the SCART connection. Also, I couldn't find anything in the EyeTV documentation that suggested it would have a problem with the video signal. The only difference I could see was in the ability for the EyeTV to accept a broadcast TV signal from Europe vs NA.
