So two friends have added me in the past two days.

they are both new to facebook.

for the first time ever, when i clicked to accept their request, from both of them, it asked "Do you know [name here] personally?"

below saying that your response will not be seen by your friend (something like that)

I said yes for both of them. But what if I said no? Does anyone have any idea why facebook is doing this? I haven't seen this reported on blogs anywhere, nor on Facebook's own blog

More information and statistics to collect about you and your life? Measuring social network trends? ("On average, among users aged 13-25, 30% of their friends list consists of people they don't even know personally, blah blah blah...")

As a rule if I don't know someone personally, I ignore their friend request.

I pimp myself as a games designer so I get requests from people who just enjoy playing what I produce. Some bits are family-only though like family photo albums, just as others are non-family only.
It's all a tangled web for me.

Haven't they always asked this question? :confuzzled:

That's what I thought, they always asked this... if that's what you are taking about.

I'm sure it helps them network friends and keep the "people you know" thing finding more random people.

Yeah I thought they always asked that for an unknown reason.

Oh and I don't ignore or accept any people I don't know. By doing that, it will ensure that they don't bother me again by sending friend requests right when I ignore them. I found that works best. :D

That is getting w-a-y beyond ridiculous.

Do they want a "dossier" on everyone one in the World??

I'm sure with the super-compters and storage they have now, it is possible.

no no

not the box that asks you

"HOW YOU KNOW THE PERSON"

this is VERY NEW

its a box that asks if "DO YOU KNOW [person name here] PERSONALLY?"

you will get two buttons "YES" or "NO"

this isnt the "did you goto school together?" blah blah blah

this isnt recorded any where, and is not change-able. thats why im interested, if its not recorded anywhere, and isn't change-able...why even ask?
