Facebook contact pictures not displaying

iPhone 6S+ running 9.2.1. I'm having an issue where in the Messages app, all the thumbnails show the default grey circle with initials, unless I manually add a contact picture from my library. I have my Facebook account set up and did a manual update of the contacts from Settings.

If I use 3d touch on the messages app, Facebook contacts correctly show for the names in that list, yet still show grey circles within the app.

Any ideas?
