Facebook's iOS app is today being updated with a new feature that will let users take 360-degree photos using the camera function directly within the Facebook app, reports TechCrunch.

Facebook has supported 360-degree images for some time, but it previously required users to take a panoramic photo with their smartphone or use a separate app.

Now users can open the camera, choose the 360 Photo option, and then follow the on-screen instructions to create a panoramic image in the Facebook app.

360-degree photos can be set as Cover Photos, and support tagging friends and zooming. The new 360-degree photo functionality is rolling out to iOS and Android users starting today.

Facebook -- proving daily that despite what the Google haters say, the majority of people actually do not care about privacy.

George Orwell's worst nightmare.

It is alarming that, together, both the Facebook and Messenger app for iPhone take up nearly 600MB.

Just what exactly is it about FB and Messenger that takes up so much space...?

Actually, I'd rather not know.

Sweet. Does it still use dubious means to remain active in the background? And require “always on” location services to use just about every feature? And generally drain the living piss out of your battery?

Can anyone recommend a good 360° photo app that saves in a unified standard format so I can view it with a multitude of apps or is Google's Streetview camera roll export already fit for that?

I don't know a lot about the subject, but I would really like to know if I'm missing out on an app that is higher quality and which's output will be well supported in future.

Either way the standard iOS camera app should get a 360° spherical mode too, especially with Apple's new hobby AR/VR.
Give Photos app a section for them and a nice way to view them. Bingo.

It's so satisfying to capture spherical photos and relive moments and places rather uniquely months or years later. Great fun!

With iOS ARKit in the works I don’t think you’ll have to wait very long.
