Facebook Messenger Dark Mode Fully Rolling Out in 'Coming Weeks'

Over the weekend, it was discovered that Facebook had hidden a "Dark Mode" toggle in the latest version of FaceBook Messenger.

On Monday Facebook confirmed the release of the hidden feature but also promised a full roll out in the "coming weeks."

Dark mode in Facebook Messenger can be enabled by sending a crescent moon emoji in Messenger. Facebook describes the process as "Simply send a crescent moon emoji - 🌙 - in any Messenger chat to unlock the setting and prompt to turn on dark mode." That said, many have found they may need to force quit Messenger or even reinstall it for the Dark mode to activate. There's been no word on a dark mode coming to Facebook proper.

Facebook also demonstrates that you can improve the look of your chats by tapping on the name, and selecting a custom color or gradient.

It really is amazing. Some 40 years after it was first introduced, we once again have ‘dark’ mode on our pc’s.

So 'coming weeks' is really code for later this year. Judging by how long it took them to roll out their redesign of Messenger last year.

why doesn't it activate automatically on sunset/sunrise? I hate toggling it myself each time and i find it hard to read during daylight.

I was just talking about the same thing with a friend (over Messenger with dark mode), and it seems like a lot of software features are added when technology becomes available: FaceID, efficient video/music streaming, digital assistants, contactless payment, etc.

Dark mode is a rare instance of change in usage determining software features; now nearly everybody has a tiny computer they use late into the night. Adding something as simple as black/gray pixels to a UI is now helpful.

You gotta wonder at which point somebody said, "You know, maybe all those dark UIs we used to have were actually kind of soothing and prevented midnight assault on eyes…"

I turned it on a few days ago. Didn’t need to force quit Messenger for it to work.

I eventually turned it off because some stickers and gifs aren’t viewable with it turned on.

I know right? I hope Apple’s dark mode is activated like that, just like how night shift is.

Dark mode? I’m still wondering why my Facebook app all of a sudden is all white instead of blue at the top. Weird.
