Facebook released a new feature today for its iOS Messenger app that allows users to receive booked flight information updates.

The instant messaging service's first 'airline bot' enables KLM Royal Dutch Airlines customers who have booked tickets through the airlines' website to have all their flight information delivered to a dedicated thread within the app.

The bot is designed to supply customers with their itinerary, boarding pass, and check-in confirmation, as well as notify of any flight delays. An option to speak to a human KLM staff member is also included.

Earlier this year, TechCrunch reported that Facebook was offering select developers access to its Messenger SDK which would allow them to build helpful service bots for the app.

According to the report, Facebook was likely giving third-party developers access to the chat SDK in an effort to make Messenger more like its Asian counterparts, such as WeChat and Line, whose users can contact dedicated accounts to buy movie tickets and pay bills.

In December 2015, Uber announced integration with Messenger via a new Transportation feature, which lets customers book taxis and receive live progress updates from within a chat thread.

Facebook Messenger is free on the App Store for iPhone. [Direct Link]

Is there anything FB does not want to know about us??

Since removing the FB app from my iPhone because of horrible impact om my battery life, I'm actually relieved not getting any annoying FB-updates on my phone anymore. Thank you FB, for reminding me how much of my time you took.

It were actually your (Facebook) friends taking up that much of your time.... but you have a point, I don't see myself using this option because I don't see why Facebook has to know when I'm travelling and where to.

Seems useful but do I want Facebook tracking me? Then every government will always know where I am.

I mean, it's obviously bad that Facebook snoops on everything we publically tell it we're doing, but that's exactly what stopped when I stopped using Facebook.

Glad I stopped using FaceBook back in 2010. They've just got their fingers into everything knowing everything about everyone. And what's up with everyone releasing chat bots all of a sudden? It's not enough to only communicate with others via text. Now we'll just have artificial friends that are always there for us and will never get mad at us, haha. The future is only going to get weirder. I have a lot more sympathy for my grandparents now. It's difficult to get older and adjust to all the ridiculous crap in the world.

My two year old is obsessed with robots right now and I'm half convinced that someday she's going to bring home a robot boyfriend for dinner and we're going to have this whole fight and she's going to call me robophobic and tell me she loves him and it's going to be a whole thing and there will be robot rights activists and I just don't even want to think about how curmudgeony I'll be by then because I'm already brimming with old man rant.

Yeah, as if that doesn't already happen the second you check-in at the airport and go through customs or security.

Is this were I tell everyone how cool I am for never having had a Facebook account? Seems chatbots are becoming the latest face of AI personal assistants, I think we just saw a similar story about Skype yesterday. I would probably use Siri more often if I could IM her rather than having to talk to my phone. Don't get my wrong, the hands free aspect of Siri is great while driving and such but there are times I would like Siri's feature but not have to speak (e.g. on my desktop or iPad Pro with smart keyboard connected).

Off to see if anyone's messaged me on MySpace...

Facebook Messenger was enough to make me remove the Messenger app and eventually the Facebook app from my phone. Best decision I've made in a while.

It's such a colossal waste of time that you could be using towards more enjoyable or productive things.

Anything can be a colossal waste of time, it just depends on how it's used.

That's not true. I had to do an access request when I became a UK citizen. They dug up and sent me all the records they had of my entering and exiting the UK. You'd be surprised at how incomplete their records are. I've got three passports and probably succeed at confusing them as to my whereabouts.

Fair enough. In the end it's about self control, but it's made specifically to be addictive -- look how many people are absolutely addicted to social media.

I still have Facebook but I only use it in browser now, and much less overall as a result.

Sure, just as it comes to many things in life, many that have been around for ages too.

I use web based chat app. And thus ChatWing is the best option for me. It's reliable and affordable and of course low of cost and easy to sign up. Even social media sites are allowed to register on ChatWing.
