Meta (aka Facebook) today announced the introduction of Messenger "shortcuts," a new Slack-style command system that allows users to speed up communication and get messages to their intended recipients.

Building on the @UserName tagging method to direct a message to a specific person in a chat, the new system introduces @everyone for grabbing everyone's attention in a group chat, and /silent to send a message to members of a chat without them being immediately notified about it during their off hours.

Messenger is also gaining additional shortcuts over the next few weeks that aim to be both practical and fun, such as /Pay to send and receive money within one-on-one Messenger chats (U.S only) and /gif to easily find and send GIFs. Users need only type /gif and then their chosen topic to see GIF options appear.

Lastly, Messenger on iOS is soon to support /shrug and /tableflip to more easily convey the old-school text-based emoticons ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻. Meta says these are just the first of many more shortcuts coming to Messenger later this year.

Can’t wait until Apples is forced to share its encryption keys with Facebook and Whats App after the “all message apps must be unified” EU legislation is passed. /s

I have to use Slack for work, and it's one of the worst UIs anywhere. The only reason slack exists is because everything else is even worse... which is pretty amazing, because slack is terrible.

Everyone is now getting trained to be a software developer

Yes, the Linuxheads who think that everyone should do everything using the command line.

Unfortunately, Apple is not immune to this phenomenon:

I don't really care that much about what happens to FB Messenger as I try to avoid using any FB products as much as possible. I just wanted to note that the "shortcuts command system", as implemented currently in Slack, is so damn irritating. It's the stupid forced popup that you can't disable I'm talking about. Just let me type my /commands in peace Slack!

This seems pretty pointless... but I got a Meta perma-ban for no reason with no recourse anyway, so all their products are pointless to me now. ??‍♂️

Thanks for sharing.

As far as the -topic- goes I’m all for command line actions. It’s really up to the user if they leverage them or not.

Glad to see nuance isn't lost in online communications. Ha.

My point was to agree with the idea that it's neat, sure. But is the average user of Fb Messenger ever going to use it? I don't think I'm alone hazarding a "no" on that.

Also, how's typing "/gif" any easier than tapping the gif button in the toolbar? That's four taps vs. one.

Ah - all these kids that don't know that all of this originated in IRC 25 years ago. Slack is literally just IRC that is tied to a paid service...
Yep. That was my first message when my employer said we're gonna use Slack. "Sooo.. this is IRC?"

Nice, all the work we've done for 45 years just to do IRC over HTTP. Swell. We literally have reached the end of the Internet. We're just starting over now.

New kids writing code who have no clue, doing the same buffer overflow and memory leak bugs we did in 1995. History be damned. Attention span less than that of a goldfish (true story, it was an actual measured experiment).

Yup. Seems to be a stupid implementation given the primary input canvas.

Have been using messenger for a few days to facilitate some sales with marketplace.. cancerous app. Can't believe there's no message selection ability to archive/delete/block multiple threads
