I have to say, after watching the Facebook Connect 2021 keynote, I came away with several impressions that I thought didn’t really fit my view of Facebook as a company. One was, there are people doing some good research there. A second was, most of it is moving in the right direction.

Much as I dislike Facebook, I can’t deny that someone should build the metaverse, and they seemed to have picked up the baton with some gusto. I think this is about the only way it would get built, because I don’t see investors stumping up the (rough ballpark figure) 2-5 billion dollars it’s going to cost to make it.

Is this Apple and Microsoft missing a trick? I think the virtual economy is going to be worth a lot of money, but it is a software project first of all, not exactly where Apple’s focus has been. It has the potential to be give stewardship of a large slice of the internet.

There’s much here to think about, that’s for sure.

It fits Facebook perfectly. All data in their hands. In time millions visiting the Sixteenth Chapel virtually, interacting with others, buying a virtual photo of themselves next to Michalengelo's David. Virtual business trips and so on. Sadly enough it will come with people having no real life anymore. This metaverse is worse than Facebook.
