Facebook has introduced a tool that lets users export notes and text-based posts to third-party services, making it easier than ever to leave the social network without saying goodbye to your content.

The new "data portability types" mean people can now directly transfer their notes and posts to Google Docs, Blogger and WordPress. The updates are extensions to Facebook's existing tool that lets users transfer photos and video to Backblaze, Dropbox, Google Photos and Koofr.
To better reflect the range of data types people can now transfer to our partners' services, we're renaming the tool "Transfer Your Information."

We designed this tool with privacy, security and utility in mind. We'll ask you to re-enter your password before the transfer starts and encrypt your data as it moves between services, so you can be confident it will be transferred securely.
To access the tool from a desktop browser, follow these steps.
  1. Log in to the Facebook website, click the Account button in the top-right corner of the screen, and select Settings & Privacy.

    Click Settings.

Click Your Facebook Information, and next to "Transfer a copy of your information," click View.

Select a media type to transfer (Photos/Videos/Posts/Notes), choose a destination which service your information will be transferred to, then click Next.

Authorize Facebook to access the chosen service.
  2. Click Confirm Transfer.
The process may take a while to complete depending on the amount of content being transferred, but once it's done you'll be able to find it in your chosen destination, ready for perusal.

I almost rolled my eyes as I scrolled past another pointless news story about Facebook on MacRumours but this actually looks helpful. Any advice on leaving this social network behind should be welcomed.

Looks good. At least Facebook is helping people retrieve their data in their posts, so people can save or repurpose it.

OK, so where are we moving our data to? Whats the alternative to Facebook that will allow import of this data?

Even though I have been locked out of my account for over a year (changed my phone number) I always would have liked the option to erase ALL likes, posts or comments since date XY from my activity log. Is that possible by now? I always hated to do it manually one by one.

Hands down the most useful thing to allow me to export would be saved posts to a source like DEVONThink. The current saved export does not have any actual content that it takes with it. There’s a lot of professional development-related content I’ve saved from groups over the years and it’s not even tying me to Facebook beingunable to export it — it’s just much less searchable and usable than it otherwise could be.

Just the whole idea of Facebook and then going into a Privacy menu.

I half expect it to open up a Gif of Zuckerberg chuckling.

Absolutely!
Perhaps, MacRumors, it would be better reporting, if you were to mention the potential relinquishing of yet more private data, and how this move by Facebook might represent more resistance to the privacy resilience being shored up by Apple. Just a suggestion ;)

Don’t know if I’m paranoid by now or exaggerating but the “Allow Facebook to access” your Google docs and the whole thing being online sounds very fishy. Is it only transferable to another online service? Can’t download it to a local computer?

I understand it being a massive data transfer though where online only makes sense (similar to Dropbox to Dropbox save transfers from online image/video/sounds assets services)

Apple Hangout, their paid social media network that's going to be bundled alongside their other services.

(a man can hope)

Apple Hangout+ for 4.99/month +30% for all paid hangouts (for the sarcasm-impaired, this is a joke).
