Some time ago, when I regrettably had an Android Galaxy Nexus, Android came out with something similar to what the iPhone 6 Plus "Messages" list shows today, which are little avatars next to each person's message thread. But, the little avatars didn't show a photo of the person; instead showing a default "no photo" type logo. After using a fairly easy workaround, I was able to link the avatars to each person's facebook profile pictures.

Is there a way to do the same for iOS Messages? Or do I have to manually put in avatar/profile photos for each person in my contacts list?

You can do this with the Cobook app, either Mac or iOS. It'll sync with the built-in contacts.
